Working Post-Covid: What’s New?

Mid-March will mark two years since the world as we knew it shut down. It’s crazy (and scary) to think so much time has passed so quickly. In the blink of an eye, our homes weren’t just our homes anymore, but our classrooms and offices and, well, everything. We all had to learn a new normal while still floundering over what we’d lost.
But there’s a positive side to this: most of us are vaccinated (and boostered) now. There is a growing sense of normalcy. Perhaps the worst of Covid is behind us? Only time will tell. However, it does make you wonder how much has really changed, and what the world might look like post-Covid, specifically the office. I saw a headline the other day claiming that Covid effectively killed the traditional office space. Is that really true?
Let’s turn to our good friend Google for some answers. According to an article on Esri.com, two-thirds of companies are now considering exclusively hybrid work. (AKA, bouncing between the physical office and home.) People appreciate flexibility—especially if faced with an unexpected quarantine of a child or partner, the ability to work from home is crucial. Still, other companies are choosing to wait and see. According to the article, some HR executives are “using a form of smart building technology to gather data and study patterns of engagement.”
So is the traditional office space dead? No, not exactly. A bit different now, but change is a very good (and healthy) thing.
