Office Space: To Choose or Not to Choose?
Office Space: To Choose or Not to Choose?
By Lyndsey Walthall
So you’re in the market for new office space. Congratulations! For whatever reason—your business is years old and you’ve finally outgrown your current space, or your business is a fledgling barely weeks old—you need an office. Where to begin, where to go? What do you want and need and more importantly, what can you afford? What amenities are available? And how do you know you’re getting a good deal and not being taken advantage of?
Fret not. Finding—and securing—the best office space for you and your business doesn’t have to be an ordeal. Think about it like this: what sort of environment do you want to work in every day? Upscale, casual, traditional? What type of location is best? City, suburb, office park? On or off-site parking? Searching for the perfect office is not so different from searching for the perfect home. Even before you start, you already have a rough idea of what you want. For example, if your greatest hatred in life is city traffic and the color pink, the brand new place directly in the center of town with the bright pink walls might not be right for you. You have other options—scratch it off the list and carry on.
Always make sure to check references, the landlords of the company you’re considering leasing space from, how long they’ve been in business, the management, services and amenities. You want to make sure what you’re getting is what you need. As with any lease, always read the fine print before signing on the dotted line. It might be tedious, but it’s important. Unfortunately, some companies don’t always have your best interests in mind—just your wallet. So they’ll hide fees in large paragraphs of text they know you won’t read; weave damaging business tactics throughout an agreement that, at first glance, seems solid. It’s important to protect not just your business, but your employees, yourself and your mental and financial well-being. After all, this is supposed to be an exciting time in your life! Don’t let some greedy corporation ruin it for you.
Look around, you have options! Since we’ve decided the pink walled traffic nightmare won’t work, you should check out BCI. As with anything in life, we can get so caught up in the doing that we forget all about the living. Juggling your business and personal life while trying to find new office space is a lot, and it’s very stressful. But it’s a good kind of stress. It means your business is doing well enough that it warrants an upgrade, or your lifelong dream of being your own boss is finally coming to fruition. Get the job done, choose the best office for you, but don’t forget to enjoy the ride!
